“Practising is hard work but it has it’s rewards like making other people happy. It’s a great feeling and never gets old.”
12 year old Tanner Massey is on a high speed freeway to success! It is such a privilege to be able to feature a young artist at the very beginning of their career and then witness them going from strength to strength in the years that follow. Torchlight Talent was one of the first blogs to feature Tanner and we are now delighted to promote him again with this update article.
Tanner’s parents talk about how they first noticed his talent:
“We first noticed that he had a special talent while he was singing to himself playing video games. We soon encouraged him to try out for the school talent show. He wasn’t sure that he was really that great until he blew the house down with Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man”. The teachers and students couldn’t believe they had such a hidden talent at their school as he had never shown it before. He has since performed several shows for the school for assemblies and other school events.
Tanner has only been singing for a year and a half and has already turned heads with his unique adaptation of Alexander Burke’s version of Hallelujah which he sang for the Dream Night Talent Search in August of last year. This was one of his first performances in front of an audience that wasn’t among his peers. He was soon discovered on YouTube and was flown out to New York to record his demo. He has since been singing at various Opry’s across Oklahoma and Texas such as the famous McSwain theater in Ada where Blake Shelton got his start. His confidence and talent has only soared from there.”
A true performer
Even last year when I spoke to Tanner over Skype, I was struck by this ‘confidence’ which his parents mention. He has the mark of a true performer in that he clearly takes great joy in what he does: you can see his eyes shining when he sings! His voice has that unique ‘boyish’ quality, a very pleasant, sparkling tone with hints of a Gospel style and plenty of power. What is truly impressive is his ability to sing a cappella with unswerving resolve, never losing focus, as in this cover of ‘Make it Right’:
So what’s next for Tanner?
“This year Tanner is making big musical strides with his talent by writing his first two original songs “Why Not Me” and “Play It Everyday” with the help of his dad. He loves to perform and he brings joy to his fans every week by doing live Periscope videos every Thursday at 6:45 Central standard time. He also tries to do other scheduled forms of video social media throughout the week. This allows him time to interact with his ‘tanfans’ as he affectionately calls them and put on a show just for them and anyone new who might find him to get his name out there. His fans on twitter have certainly been his biggest supporters, some of which have traveled several hundred miles to see him perform.
He is a stand in for the OKC Dodgers for the National Anthem and has entered several competitions in Oklahoma and is preparing for a talent competition in L.A. this July. He is also working on a third original song that he hopes to get completed later this summer.”
An admirable work ethic
Knowing that Tanner discovered his aptitude for music relatively late, I hugely admire his work ethic. He has set himself a goal and is showing the determination and perseverance necessary to achieve it. His parents tell me that he has been working hard to master his musical talent by not only improving his vocals but also learning piano and guitar. Tanner says:
“Practising is hard work but it has it’s rewards like making other people happy. It’s a great feeling and never gets old.
My Dad has been a great motivator in helping me to write songs that we feel will inspire other people to believe in themselves and be successful too.”
My favourite track by Tanner is still his cover of ‘Hallelujah’ which I think he sings with real soul!
Tanner is a bit of a master of social media and is making his presence felt on a multitude of platforms! Here they are:
His original songs “Play It Everyday” and “Why Not Me”are available for download on iTunes and Google Play.
We look forward to seeing what more amazing things Tanner will be up to this year. He does not yet have any professional music videos and we eagerly await a debut album, but be sure we will be ready to share these as soon as they drop!
